Mahogany Pecan Lamp

The body is made of Pecan wood, which is a species of hickory, native in the United States from southern
Iowa, Illinois and Indiana east to western Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and western Tennessee,
south through Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas and "Pecan" is from
an Algonquian word, meaning a nut requiring a stone to crack.


The base is made of Mahogany. The valuable hardwood called mahogany is obtained from many members
of the family; in America and Europe it is imported for cabinet making and similar uses. According to tradition
it was first introduced to England from the West Indies when Sir Walter Raleigh had a mahogany table made
for Queen Elizabeth I; the popularity of the wood increased steadily in the 18th cent. The different mahoganies
vary in color from golden to deep red brown; most are close-grained and resistant to termites.

world and will rapidly sink to the bottom when placed in water. It resists rot caused
by insects and moisture so effectively that remains of Lignum vitae wood used as
posts for dwellings by Taino Indians discovered in Tutu, St. Thomas were dated by
carbon dating and found to be over 800 years old. In colonial days this hard, strong,
and long-lasting wood was an invaluable construction material.

Lignum-Vitae has been used by the Navy and other military applications as Stern
Tube and Jack Staff bearings in the stuffing box for Destroyers, Submarines, Mine
Sweepers, Polar Class Icebreakers and other large ships. Authentic Lignum-Vitae

In the Granadillo family from Guatemala. Hormigo can range in color from reddish
brown complimented by dark brown/black streaks (Hormigo Negro) to a satiny
reddish-orange, similar to that of Bloodwood (Hormigo Rojo).While Hormigo Rojo
and Hormigo Negro are somewhat different in appearance, the trees are identical
on the outside and cannot be differentiated until they are cut down and milled
